NO DIEGO FOR CHRISTMAS!
Caryn came across this post tonight from 2 months ago over on babyblogging.com—Open letter to Nick Jr and its licensees. It goes right along with part of my Nick Jr and kid control post from last week, and is an attempt to scream some sanity into the ears of Nick Jr execs to put out shirts, underwear, spotting scopes, and rescue packs with our kids’ favorite character on them.
“Diego! Dora for boys!” Sarah Gilbert writes, echoing my recent gladness in finding a male role model for the twins. Her article puts our parent sentiments well:
“Our little boys want to wear t-shirts, and running shoes, and underwear, and diapers, and socks, and those magical backpacks, depicting their favorite friend. Yes, we’d like Diego on clothes. We’d also like Boots, Swiper and (yes! a little girl – I am not kidding!) DORA on clothes. Dora underwear for boys. You think it sounds crazy? Well, try explaining to your manly man of a husband why you brought home pink girl’s underwear for your darling little metrosexual. So few of us have the fortitude.”
She goes on to lament the lack of these good for our boys, which to her was out of control in OCTOBER. HELLO! It’s now December, and all the twins want are Rescue Packs and cameras to be just like Diego. But nothing!
Nick Jr certainly could use a few words from Stevie Rubel and his blog-savvy firm in figuring out how to gleen some advice from blogging mommies. But blogs or not, how could they not introduce some Diego wares before Christmas?
Take a hint: it’s not so bad to come out with shirts, bags, underwear even! of your character. We want it, we need it, we will pay for it. If you have a success on your hands, don’t be afraid to stoke the fire a bit and enjoy the wonderful problems of catering to millions of rabid fans.
